At ten years old, I believed happiness was hidden inside a single peacock feather. My cousin had a treasured bundle he had gathered over the years, while I had not found even one. Every summer in our village of Gorewadi, nestled among hundreds of acres of farmland, my ten-year-old cousin and I rose before 4 a.m., racing the sunrise into the fields because that fleeting hour during late summer was the only chance to discover a freshly fallen feather before someone else did. For three months, we searched with unwavering hope—from dawn until lunch, then again until dusk, and on some magical days, from sunrise to sunset, surviving on juicy mangoes plucked straight from the trees, afternoon naps beneath the cool guava orchard, homemade chutney-bhakri with raw onions packed lovingly for us, endless laughter with cousins, village games, tree climbing, and slow bullock cart rides through the fields. When summer ended, I still hadn't found a single feather, and my young heart carried the weight of that disappointment. Yet time has a beautiful way of rewriting our memories. Today, I no longer remember the emptiness of returning home empty-handed; I remember the golden mornings, the scent of the earth after dawn, the sweetness of fruit eaten under open skies, the joy of being surrounded by the people I loved, and the quiet lessons nature whispered about patience, perseverance, and finding abundance where we least expect it. This painting is born from that realization—it is not about the feather I never found, but about the priceless childhood I did. Sometimes, life doesn't reward us with what we spend our days searching for; instead, it quietly fills those days with moments that become the greatest treasures of all.
